Hotel Concierge: The most ridiculous requests made
By: Alexandra Mundlak
The job of a hotel concierge is to comply with the requests the hotel’s guests are making, no matter how outrageous they may be. Generally speaking, hotel guests are constantly asking for relevant things, such as seeking extra shampoo, maybe towels, rolls of toilet paper, an ironing board at times, or even asking for reservations to be made, but, despite this, there are also times in which guests ask peculiar questions and desire quite odd things, and concierges have no choice but to abide by their wishes. Some of the most unusual requests that have been seen throughout hotels include,
A Pillow Fort
A businessman who traveled constantly to Salt Lake City, Utah for work got bored of traveling to the same place as consistently as he was and of the whole checking in and out process, so to mix things up a bit and entertain himself, he started to request really random and weird things, such as photos of Donald Trump looking confused, a photo of Grandma Winslow from Family Matters, and a pillow fort. When he got back to the room the day he requested the pillow fort, the construction made of blankets, sheets, pillows and other cushions was there set up waiting for him.
A Photo of Nicolas Cage
A guest that checked into a hotel in San Antonio Texas got after his check in process asking if there was anything they needed, to just let the concierge know, so for the fun of it, during his work conference, he responded to the automated text asking for a framed photograph of Nicolas Cage in “Con Air.” After having sent the text, the guest got a consenting response in which he believed was automated, and then when he returned to his room the framed photo of Nicolas Cage from “Con Air” was waiting on his bedside with a note that said “Sweet dreams.”
Photos of Jeff Goldbum
In the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica, California, a man and his girlfriend, prior to booking the room and while making the reservation, decided to have fun with the ‘special requests’ option given, and requested multiple framed photographs of Jeff Goldblum. Thinking the hotel staff wouldn’t comply with their request, upon checking into the hotel and walking into their room, they were surprised to see framed pictures on the bedside table, in the bathroom, and throughout the room. The reason behind the request was because the man’s girlfriend’s celebrity crush is Jeff Goldblum!
Twenty Pounds of Ice
In Boston’s Seaport Hotel, a hotel guest asked for 20 pounds of ice for his penguins. This was real- the penguins were visiting Boston as part of one of the exhibits at the Boston Globe Travel Show. During their visit, they would in the bathtub of the hotel when they weren’t on display in the show. The concierge brought the twenty pounds of ice in order to help the penguins feel comfortable during their stay.
Kobe Beef – Daily
In London’s St. Ermin’s Hotel, a guest requested a serving of kobe beef on a daily basis. Usually, food requests aren’t strange, but this one happened to be for the guest’s dog. The concierge of this hotel arranged with a nearby restaurant to prepare the beef fresh each day for the dog. Just for your information, kobe beef is generally pricey, costing £150 for 150g or sometimes 180g, depending on the restaurant you choose to go to.
A Bathtub Filled with Wild Goat’s Milk
In another hotel in London, The Savoy, a guest asked for their bathtub to be filled with wild goat’s milk – to bathe in. It had to be imported from Wales, then transported via taxi, which all turned out to be pretty pricey. In the end, it also took thirty bottles of water to remove the milk from the guest’s body which added to the cost of the whole odyssey.
Photo of Dog
In another hotel in which one can text the concierge their requests, a hotel guest requested a framed picture of not only a dog, but the dog dressed as a boat captain. The hotel staff somehow managed to fulfill this weird request and left the framed photograph on the guest’s bed. To our question whether the hotel got into trouble with Animal Protective Services, they had no comment.
M&Ms and Bacon
In a hotel in The Woodlands in Texas, a man requested three single M&Ms, explaining that one would be for his girlfriend, himself, and one to split if they get hungry late at night. He proceeded and asked for a picture of bacon on the bed and justified it by saying he loves pictures of bacon. After a day went by and the man thought the concierge blew off his ridiculous request, he and his girlfriend were surprised to come back to their room to see three M&Ms lined up and a framed picture of bacon lying on the pillow of the bed.
A few days after having checked in, a hotel guest requested via text, for the hotel’s concierge to draw a picture of what they think he or she looked like. The hotel staff drew up a picture, framed it, and placed it on the bed of the person’s room. Who knows how accurate they actually were?
In the Monte Carlo Inn in Ontario, a guest requested a dinosaur, but more specifically a baby stegosaurus. He further stated he would take care of the stegosaurus, providing it with food and water. Later that day, the concierge left a miniature, plastic, toy version of the the reptile with an attached note apologizing for not being able to have fulfilled the request to their utmost potential – since ‘stegosaurus are hard to come by these days
When booking a hotel months before their stay, as a joke this man requested in the ‘special requests’ section, ‘champagne, rose petals, and a plastic dinosaur.’ The night this man got to the hotel, in his bedroom he found exactly what he had requested – the champagne, rose petals, and a plastic dinosaur.
At the W Seattle, a guest requested a pillow fort but with an additional special request – an elephant made out of their towels, and a ‘sexy picture of some fruit on the night table.’ That same night, when the guests got to their room, they were very satisfied upon seeing the fort, the elephant, and the sexy picture of the fruit on the bedside table.
Evidently, what you would think is a ridiculous question to ask the concierge of your hotel might turn out to be quite simple compared to the above requests, so don’t be afraid to ask for things you may want or need- they’ll appreciate the simplicity and usuality of your request and do everything in their power to fulfil it!
