8 Bars in Malaga Worth Your While.
By: Maartje Swartjes
For my Gap Year I decided that I wanted to take a break from my daily life back in Holland. I wanted to explore and discover, combined with learning a language. Spain has always been one of my favorite countries, and therefore it did not take much time for me to decide that I wanted to go to Spain. I chose to go to Malaga, because of the good weather, the sublime language schools and, of course, this is the place to go if you want to indulge yourself with amazing seafood. Yet Malaga not only has perfect restaurants, there are some fantastic pubs as well. Let me take you through eight of them and choose which one you want to visit when you visit the south of Spain!
While the name of this pub might suggest that you can get a lot of beer here, which obviously is true, you can also get another amazingly good drink here. Located at Plaza de la Merced, The Irish Pub is one of the best places to visit when you want sangria.
Sangria is a drink consisting of red wine, sugar, honey and fruits. Sometimes bars add some extra soda to make the drink cheaper. However, there is not one recipe for this drink and therefore the taste will differ from bar to bar. When I am up for a good drink after school, this is most likely the place where you can find me. You can say that I am slightly addicted to Sangria and for me, this is the best tasting one. It is served in a big glass with a piece of cinnamon. This really sparks up the drink and makes it even more tasting!
Not only do they serve good tasting beers and sangria, but you can also decide to eat dinner here. My recommendation is Pechuga de pollo, also known as chicken breast. It is served with homemade fries, a small salad and the chicken is served with bacon and sea salt. A recommendation for sure!
If you are looking for a night with cheap drinks, you have to go to Boat. It’s a place where you can find many students who want to drink before going out. Therefore, this is definitely not the place to go to if you are looking for some small talk with your friends and a fun night. Yet I had to put Boat on the list, because if you are a student and looking for a great start of your night – this is the place to go.
In my area, Boat is famous (or notorious, decide for yourself haha) for its copas. A copa here is a big cup, which, I guess, holds up to 1 liter of drink. There are a few mix drinks you can get for only three euros. Most of the time I take a Gin-Tonic, but sometimes I switch it up for a Bacardi-Coke. If you want something more luxury, you pay six euros for one copa. I have to admit that the drinks are mixed with less expensive sodas and therefore some drinks might not taste amazing. However, as I said before, this is the place to visit when you want a cheap start of your night. Another example: Tequila shots are only one euro and Absolut shots just two. You can´t go wrong with that.
Overall, this bar is not a place you want to visit for a longer time. We visit this place to meet up with our friends, have a drink and then move over to the clubs, since it is located in the middle of the center. You can find Boat at Calle Juan de Padilla, number 24.
Another Irish Pup on the list! This one as well serves great beers and the atmosphere here is just like a real pub in Ireland. Yet this one really stands out if you are into sports and you love to watch your favorite team with a good beer. The pub is fully equipped with wooden bars, chairs and walls. It adds up to the cozy atmosphere of a fun night with your friends. Or even when you are by yourself, this pub is the best place to visit. You can find this pub at Calle Méndez Núñes number 5.
If my friends and I are up for some drinks but we don´t want to have a sangria, we like to go to Café Central. This café is located at the Plaza de la Constitución number 11. This plaza is right next to the main shopping street and therefore always busy. If you like to watch people with a drink and some churros, I would highly recommend Café Central! It doesn´t matter if you go here at ten in the morning or four o´clock in the afternoon – there are always interesting people to observe.
A large group of chattering women who just left a café and are a little tipsy, two lovers who´s classes are over for today and are now going for a drink, or even a couple that just got married and are now taking pictures in the center. The city is never boring, or, as we say about New York, Malaga is never asleep as well.
El Pimpi is very famous throughout Malaga. Everyone knows this bar, which serves as a restaurant as well. Therefore, if you are looking to eat here, I would advise you to make a reservation in advance. It is for a reason that it is always busy here. The seafood is incredibly good, the service is on point and the sangria is good as well. The terrace looks over the old Romanian Theatre and gives you the feeling like you are visiting ´The real Malaga´, and not a city with lots of foreigners.
Besides, if you are not that hungry but you do would like to get a drink and eat some tapas, El Pimpi´s bar is great and serves very good food. Calle Granada number 62 is the street where you can find this great bar!
AC Hotel Malaga Palacio
Another amazing place to go is this hotel. On the 15th floor is a beautiful rooftop bar, including a DJ, swimming pool and a very good bar with some great drinks. The view over Malaga city is incredible. You are very close to the Cathedral, which is light up with many spotlights. Apart from that you can see Mulle Uno, which is the port, The Alcazaba and the castle Gibralfaro and all the lights in the city. Being this high normally scares me, yet here I loved to watch the city with a good wine and a group of friends. The music adds up to the atmosphere and served for a great start of the evening.
You do should take a jacket with you, because when there is a wind, it can get colder! Calle Cortina del Muelle number 1 is the address where you have go for a beautiful view over the city.
This is another bar where a lot of students like to go. It is located at the same Plaza as the Irish Pub; namely Plaza de la Merced. Whenever we have a group of new students arriving at the campus, we like to take them here and go for a drink.
The drinks are cheaper here, the food is ´okay´ and the service can be really bad. Yet that is what you can expect when you visit a bar where many students go: we don´t have a lot of money to pay for all the extra´s. However, just like Boat, the atmosphere here is great. It really depends on yourself if you will have a great evening. If you are able to make it a great night by yourself and you are able to have fun, than this bar will be perfect for you. If not, I suggest you skip this bar!
To finish off this list, I want to end with the bar where you can eat the best Churros out of all Malaga. Sure, you can get them in almost every bar or Café, but if you want to try them the way they should really taste; this place is calling your name! One portion serves three churros, but they are huge. And I mean absolutely huge. Normally, a churro is quite small and thin. If I would guess, I would say that these ones are five times as big as the normal ones! Order them with chocolate, and you will have the best snack ever (even though you could probably eat them for lunch as well). You can find this Café at Herrería del Rey number 3!
To me, these eight bars and cafés are truly my favorite places to go when I want a drink, snack or just a great evening with my friends here. Give it a shot and have a great time in one of the best cities in Spain!
